Overwatch Could Soon Have a Custom Maps Editor

Overwatch Custom Maps

With the recent success of Overwatch and the Game Browser, Blizzard has made it loud and clear that they listen to their fans. And it is because of the love of their fans, that the game has been successful. With fan arts, stories, highlights, concepts, and much more, a question comes to mind; Will players be able to create their own maps one day?

Is it possible?

Game Director Jeff Kaplan spoke regarding the subject on the Battle.net fourms;

We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday. But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public.

How Important is Custom Maps?

While it is mentioned that it would take some time in order to make it happen, Custom Maps will be one of the points of the game that will make it last. Similar to StarCraft II, user made Custom Maps that were widely used by players were eventually added to the competitive mode.

It’s also important to remember that popular game titles today, such a DotA2 and Counter-Strike, were once custom maps that came from the ingenuity of players. What games we play in the future, might just be from a custom map of tomorrow.
