Overwatch almost had a hero cat with a jetpack

The vast array of colorful heroes is an integral part of Overwatch’s gameplay, but what about a hero that is a cat with a jetpack? Seems kind of absurd, even for Overwatch’s world isn’t it?

One of the few things, and quite possibly the most interesting information revealed by Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch’s game director, was that one of the character concepts that was shelved, was the cat with a jetpack, as explicitly said for the first time in an interview with Gamespot.

“This is an exclusive, no one has ever heard this before, but when we were first starting to make Overwatch we had to test the boundaries. It was a new IP and we didn’t know how far or wide we could go, so Winston was kind of this cornerstone in a lot of ways. It was like, ‘Hey there’s a gorilla and he talks, is that okay? Yeah, that’s okay.’ Then on the other end of the spectrum you’ve got guys like Soldier: 76 who is a soldier guy and they were good bookends. But we had explored much further out from that.”

Kaplan went over with a few more details regarding the character in the interview.

“Then there was this one hero that was a huge internal debate on the team because we just loved it so much but it didn’t make it. It was this jetpack and it had this cat that laid in it, like a cat does. Then every once in awhile it would paw at the controls. It was a cat in a jetpack.”

While the idea was certainly out-of-the box, and with the uncertainty hinging on whether the character would be a hit or miss, the concept was ultimately shelved. As Kaplan stated, “Yeah that’s probably too far.” The idea, albeit silly, could have worked or not, and all we can do now is wonder how a cat with a jetpack character would impact an already wonderful Overwatch experience.
